ScholarSafe

How Verification Works

ScholarSafe offers verification tiers for landlords and students to build trust across the platform.

Trust signals on ScholarSafe, at a glance

These terms mean different things — here's how to tell them apart:

  • Landlord Verified — the landlord's identity has been reviewed by our team. It says nothing about a specific property.
  • Property Details Reviewed — that landlord's property ownership documentation has also been checked (part of Gold Verified).
  • Not Yet Verified — no identity review has happened yet. Their listings can still be Admin Approved and appear on ScholarSafe.
  • Admin Approved — a listing's content was reviewed by our team before it went live. Every listing goes through this, regardless of landlord verification tier.
  • Community Reviews — ratings and comments left by students who used the platform. Reflects tenant experience, not an official check.
  • Safety Score — a 1–100 rating based on student-reported experience and neighborhood data, shown separately for day and night.

What each verification standard actually checks

This is the precise, plain-language standard behind every badge on ScholarSafe. If a badge's short label (like “Verified Student”) ever sounds stronger than what's below, this section is the accurate version.

School Email Verified

Confirms control of an eligible institution-issued email address.

Does not confirm:

  • Identity
  • Age
  • Current enrollment
  • Graduation status
  • Background
  • Safety
  • Housing eligibility

Landlord Review Completed

Means staff reviewed submitted information or documents.

Does not guarantee:

  • Identity
  • Background
  • Professional license
  • Lawful conduct
  • Property authority
  • Listing accuracy

Ownership or Listing Authority Reviewed

Means documents were reviewed that reasonably indicated ownership, management authority, or permission to list.

Does not guarantee:

  • Legal title
  • Authority in every jurisdiction
  • Habitability
  • Availability
  • Compliance with housing law
  • Accuracy of every listing claim

On-screen badges use shorter labels (“Verified Student,” “Landlord Verified,” “Property Details Reviewed”) that map directly to the three standards above — the badge is the short form, this section is the actual standard behind it.

Landlord Verification Tiers

Not Yet Verified

Not Yet Verified Landlord

  • Account created on ScholarSafe
  • Listing submitted and Admin Approved by our team
  • No additional identity checks completed

Listings from a landlord who is Not Yet Verified are still Admin Approved for content quality and safety before publication — Admin Approval and Landlord Verified are separate checks.

Landlord Verified

Landlord Verified

  • Email address confirmed
  • Basic identity review by ScholarSafe team
  • At least one listing Admin Approved
  • No fraud flags on account

Landlord Verified confirms identity, not property condition — it does not constitute an endorsement of the landlord or guarantee the accuracy of any listing's details.

Gold Verified

Gold Verified Landlord

  • All Landlord Verified requirements
  • Property ownership documentation reviewed ("Property Details Reviewed")
  • Consistent positive Community Reviews over time
  • No unresolved reports or complaints

Gold Verified is our highest landlord tier. It represents a track record of honesty and quality, not a guarantee.

What We Check, and What We Don't Guarantee

What ScholarSafe checks

  • Landlord identity — email, and for Landlord Verified, a basic identity review by our team
  • Property ownership documentation — for Gold Verified, before the "Property Details Reviewed" badge is granted
  • Every listing's content — reviewed for quality and safety before it goes live (Admin Approved), regardless of verification tier
  • Ongoing account standing — fraud flags and unresolved reports factor into whether a tier is kept

What ScholarSafe does not guarantee

  • That a property is risk-free, or that its condition matches the listing exactly
  • That a landlord will be a good landlord after verification — it's a point-in-time identity/documentation check, not an ongoing endorsement
  • That every detail in a listing (price, availability, amenities) is current — always confirm directly with the landlord
  • Any legal or financial outcome of a lease you sign through ScholarSafe

Student Verification

  • Any valid email works — students with a .edu address are auto-verified; others can request manual verification.
  • Email verification is required before submitting reviews.
  • This helps ensure reviews come from real students with real housing experience.
  • We do not share your university email with landlords without your consent.
