Fair Housing & Anti-Discrimination Policy
ScholarSafe prohibits housing discrimination on our platform.
The federal Fair Housing Act and equivalent California law prohibit discrimination in housing based on protected characteristics. ScholarSafe prohibits the same conduct on our platform, in listings, roommate profiles, reviews, messages, and any other content.
Protected characteristics
Listings, and how we review reports, treat the following as protected:
- Race or color
- Religion
- National origin
- Sex, including sexual orientation and gender identity
- Familial status (including having children)
- Disability
- Any other characteristic protected under federal, state, or local law
What landlords may not do
When creating or editing a listing, you may not state or imply a preference, limitation, or exclusion based on a protected characteristic — for example, in a listing's title, description, or photos. Every landlord certifies compliance with this policy when submitting a listing.
Roommate matching
ScholarSafe's roommate matching lets users state a preferred roommate gender. This reflects the well-established distinction between renting an entire unit (covered by fair housing law) and selecting who to share a private living space with (traditionally treated differently under fair housing law and platforms like it). This is not a blanket exemption for every characteristic — roommate profiles and bios still may not express a preference, limitation, or exclusion based on race, color, religion, national origin, or disability. This distinction has not been reviewed by counsel for ScholarSafe specifically and should not be relied on as a final legal conclusion.
Reporting discriminatory content
If you see a listing, roommate profile, review, or message that appears to discriminate based on a protected characteristic, use the in-app Report button and select “Discriminatory content.” Our team reviews these reports and may remove content, warn, or suspend accounts that violate this policy.
Enforcement
Content or accounts found to violate this policy may be removed, warned, or suspended at ScholarSafe's discretion. This policy does not create a private right of action against ScholarSafe, and nothing here limits your own right to pursue a fair housing complaint with HUD, the California Civil Rights Department, or another appropriate authority.
